The average DLP lamp only has a life expectancy of several years depending on the usage. When your lamp eventually dies, you will want to try and save as much money when getting a new one as possible. Bargain shopping and haggling are great, but you might even be able to get one for free if you are lucky.

Check Your Warranty

Did you get the extended warranty that was offered when you bought your TV? If so, you may be able to get your new DLP lamp for free by collecting on your warranty. It is always good practice to get a new DLP lamp right before your warranty terminates. This will extend the amount of time before you actually have to pay for a new lamp.

Avoid Installation Costs

DLP lamps are relatively simple to install, and you can find manuals all over the internet to help you do that. A major cost when replacing your lamp is the hourly rate of the person who is installing it. Eliminate that cost, and you have already saved hundreds.

Bargain Shopping

You should look around for the best price you can find. This usually means that you have to avoid the place where you bought the TV initially. They will try to convince you to buy the lamp and have one of their employees install it for you. Buying a lamp from a store increases the cost of a lamp and adds the cost of installation. It is just a bad idea in general.

You can save a lot of money if you shop online. This will eliminate the cost of the middle man and you can buy it straight from the source. The internet is so competitive, you can save hundreds by doing a little bargain shopping.

Don't Buy a Used One

If you ever run into a situation where you can buy a used DLP lamp, don't. The lamp's life will be shortened because it is used. You have no way to tell how much time it has left. Also the lamps contain mercury. This makes them a hazardous material and if it isn't shipped properly, someone could get into a lot of trouble.

Recycle

When you have finished installing your new DLP lamp, you need to dispose of the old one. There are several services on the internet that will recycle your old lamp for you. Don't just throw it out. Remember, it has mercury in it. It is a lot easier to save money on a DLP lamp if you do a little research first. By avoiding big chain stores and shopping online you can save hundreds of dollars on a great one.
