Some types are more costly since they use different types of light or make a long-lasting tan. But perhaps you're wondering how different the bulbs actually are and how they affect your health. Before buying any tanning bed, understand exactly what you're getting.

Tanning bulbs give you a tan by mimicking the sun. The lamps create the same kind of light found in fluorescent light bulbs. However, the light is changed before it exits the bulb through different methods. These methods make ultraviolet light A and B (UV-A and UV-B) that tans your skin.

Naturally the best way to get these rays are from the sun. But during the fall and winter months it can be hard to get outdoors. Even if you can get outside, the angle of the sun is decreased. That means on average, vitamin D levels typically drop as much as 50% in the winter. Vitamin D supports your immune system. Benefits of vitamin D include; cardiovascular health, prostate health, healthy skin and it helps increase your white blood cells.

Your skin will benefit if you use the right type of tanning bed or lamp. Specifically, light in the 633 nanometer range. When your skin is exposed to light in this range, your skin cells are naturally stimulated. This leads to the production of collagin, elastin and certain enzymes that support the skin. Light in this range will improve the clarity, tone and texture of your skin. This in turn leads to a more youthful appearance. Another benefit is that this specific light improves the permeability of your skin. This increases the effectiveness of the skin lotions that you use.
